Bangladeshi students' common mistakes when applying to Finnish universities

Finland Application Mistakes to Avoid: 10 Errors That Cost Bangladeshi Applicants a Place

Direct answer

The costliest mistakes in a Finland application are administrative, not academic: an English test that is not on the accepted list, a missed proof deadline, an unpaid €100 fee, missing or unattested documents, and a late residence permit. Since 2024, the overall acceptance rate for English-taught programmes has risen from 18% to 37%, while Bangladesh's share of applicants has fallen from 18% to 8%. The pool is smaller and the odds are better, which means a preventable error now costs you more than competition does.

Why Do These Mistakes Matter More Now?

The Finnish National Agency for Education (OPH) publishes the figures for each joint application to English-taught programmes. The trend over three rounds is clear.

RoundApplicantsOverall acceptanceBangladesh share
Spring 2024about 63,00018%18% of applicants
Spring 202526,100 (final)33%9% of applicants, 10% of accepted
Spring 2026about 21,80037%8% of applicants, 8% of accepted

OPH reports that Bangladeshi applicants fell by more than 5,000 after the €100 application fee was introduced in 2025. For the students who remain, a place is more reachable than it was, but only if the application is complete. At Study in Finland, our Dhaka team sees the same avoidable errors repeat each round, and the ten below are the ones that matter most.

One honest note before the list. Study in Finland, the official information service, states that using a consultant gives you no advantage in the student selection, and recommends that you apply for your residence permit yourself. You can do all of this alone. The value of good advice is in avoiding the mistakes below, not in any influence over selection.

Mistake 1: Submitting an English Test That Is Not on the List

Short answer: Only listed tests are accepted, and Duolingo is not on the lists we checked.

The UAS Bachelor's language page states: "Only the tests listed above will be accepted. No exceptions will be made." The minimums are IELTS Academic 6.0, PTE Academic 55 and a Cambridge scale score of 169 (B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency only). TOEFL iBT scoring changed on 21 January 2026, so check the current minimum for your test date. The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) requires IELTS 6.0 with at least 5.5 in every other component, and PTE 62 with at least 61 in writing, which is stricter than the UAS minimum.

Fix: book a listed test early and match the minimum to the strictest programme on your list.

Mistake 2: Assuming English-Medium Schooling Counts

Short answer: For Bangladeshi applicants, it generally does not.

UEF's language page accepts upper secondary or degree studies in English only from listed countries, and Bangladesh is not one of them. An English-medium school in Dhaka does not change that. The page does not address the HSC directly, so confirm with admissions if you believe an exemption applies. Our guide on whether Bangladeshi HSC students can study in Finland covers the wider eligibility picture.

Fix: plan to take a test unless a programme page names your qualification.

Mistake 3: Using an Expired or Unverifiable Result

Short answer: IELTS results can be verified for 3 years and TOEFL for 2 years. After that, the test is invalid.

Results must also be verifiable online during a set window. For the spring 2027 joint application, the verification window runs from 7 January to 22 March 2027. UEF applies a two-year validity to TOEFL, IELTS and PTE.

Fix: check the issue date and the verification service before you pay for a new test.

Mistake 4: Missing the English Proof Deadline

Short answer: For spring 2027, the deadline is 28 January 2027, 15:00 Finnish time.

For UAS Bachelor's applicants, English proof is required before you can be invited to the International UAS Exam on 23 March 2027, and selection remains conditional until the certificate is verified. If you will graduate after the application period, a late proof option runs to 13 July 2027, but only for specific qualifications. The exam itself is a separate step, so treat the proof deadline as the first gate.

Fix: upload proof during the application, not after.

Mistake 5: Not Paying the €100 Application Fee

Short answer: Applicants from outside the EU/EEA pay €100, and an unpaid application is not processed.

OPH reported that about 6,000 applications were removed last spring for non-payment. The University of Helsinki states that there are no fee waivers on financial grounds. At current rates, €100 is about BDT 13,741.

Fix: pay inside the form and keep the receipt.

Mistake 6: Missing Attachments or Unattested Degrees

Short answer: About one in five early rejections in a University of Turku Master's example were for missing required documents.

That example comes from the University of Turku's admissions blog and covers Master's applicants, so treat it as a warning and not a Bachelor's statistic. In the same example, almost half of early rejections lacked proof of English. For Bangladesh, the University of Helsinki requires degree certificates and transcripts to be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Consular and Welfare Wing), with the ministry's original seal and signature on each page of the transcript and certificate.

Fix: start MOFA attestation before the application window opens.

Mistake 7: Using Documents from an Affiliated College

Short answer: The University of Helsinki states that educational documents awarded by affiliated colleges are not accepted.

Documents must come from the main university or a college with degree-awarding status. This catches students from colleges affiliated with a national university. The rule is Helsinki's, and other institutions set their own, so check each country page.

Fix: confirm the awarding body on your certificate before you pay for attestation.

Mistake 8: Choosing Only Crowded Fields

Short answer: Applicants per place range from 2.6 in engineering to 9.2 in arts.

FieldApplicants per place (spring 2026)
Arts and culture9.2
Social sciences8.7
Education4.9
ICT2.8
Engineering and technology2.6

In 2025, arts drew about 11.6 applicants per place and engineering about 3.8. Business, administration and law and ICT attract the largest absolute numbers of applicants.

Fix: keep your first choice honest, but include at least one programme in a less crowded field. You can rank up to six programmes in the joint application. Our guide on university versus UAS in Finland helps you decide where to look.

Mistake 9: Treating €800 as a Budget, or Counting on Relatives' Money

Short answer: The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) requires €800 a month, shown in your own account, for six months. A relative's sponsorship letter is not accepted.

That is a legal floor, not a living budget. Study in Finland recommends €900 to €1,200 a month, and tuition is separate. If a parent funds the account, you may need documents showing where the money came from. Our scholarship guide explains which awards cover tuition and which do not.

Fix: move funds early, keep transfer records and budget well above €800.

Mistake 10: Starting the Residence Permit Late

Short answer: About 61% of first student permits are decided within 30 days, so around four in ten take longer.

Migri's 6 May 2026 notice added that the Finnish missions in New Delhi, Kathmandu, Abuja and Doha gave students priority in June and July 2026 because applications had risen sharply. Finland has no mission in Dhaka, so Bangladeshi applicants prove their identity and give fingerprints at a mission or a VFS service point. You must hold a study place and accept it, and have health insurance. Migri says to apply as soon as possible after accepting the place.

Fix: book your identity appointment the moment you submit the online application.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common reason Finland applications are rejected?

In the University of Turku Master's example, missing English proof was the top reason, followed by missing attachments and an irrelevant degree background.

Is Duolingo accepted for Finland?

It is not on the UAS or UEF accepted-test lists we checked. Only listed tests are accepted, with no exceptions.

Is there an application fee?

Yes, €100 for applicants from outside the EU/EEA, and unpaid applications are not processed.

Do I need an agent to apply?

No. Study in Finland says a consultant gives no advantage in selection, and you can apply directly through Studyinfo.fi.

How long does the student residence permit take?

About 61% of first applications are decided within 30 days, according to Migri's 2026 notice.

Can I use my parents' money for the permit?

It must be in your own account, and relatives' sponsorship letters are not accepted.

Conclusion

Most of these mistakes are small, and each has a deadline and a number attached to it. Choose a listed English test, pay the fee, attest your degree, spread your six choices across fields, and move your funds early. The students who lose places in Finland are usually not the weakest on paper, but the ones who missed a step.
